The century long search for a settlement by the Aztecs ended with the discovery in 1325 of an island in Lake Texcoco, which they called Tenochtitlán. Legend has it that they were led to the site by spotting an eagle on a cactus, an emblem reinterpreted by the Spanish conquerors, as in this manuscript illustration, as an eagle devouring a serpent. A powerful city developed into Mexico City of today.
