Timur the Lame, also known as Tamburlaine (1336-1405), was the last of the mighty conquerors of Central Asia, whose campaigns ranged from Mongolia to the Mediterranean. Of Mongol descent, his cruelty matched that of Ghengis Khan, with whom he claimed common ancestry. Timur's response to revolts in his empire was the destruction of the offending cities, the massacre of their populations and the construction of towers built of the rebels' skulls.
