Martin Luther (1483-1546), son of a miner, abandoned law to enter monastic life in 1505. The nailing of the 95 theses to the door of Wittenburg Castle church in 1517 signalled his struggles to combat the widespread abuses in the Catholic church and caused a schism. His radical protests against Catholic doctrine led to his excommunication in 1521 and the upheaval of the Reformation.
