British naval captain and explorer James Cook (1728-79) landing at Tanna, New Hebrides 1774, From 1768-79 he conducted three major expeditions, discovering Australia and exploring the Antarctic and the Pacific. He is famous for insisting on taking scientists on board and including citrus fruit in his crew's diet to avoid scurvy. He came to a gruesome end when he was stabbed by Polynesians in the Sandwich islands.
