Marie-Antoinette (1755-93) married Louis XVI at age 14. As queen, she and her entourage quickly gained a reputation for extravagance and immoral behaviour. Faced with revolutionary republicanism, Louis proved weak and after the storming of the Bastille in July 1789, Marie-Antoinette took control to ensure the survival of the French Crown, even resorting to a plea for military assistance from her brother Leopold II of Austria - but to no avail. She was convicted for opposing the Revolution and in October 1793 sent to the guillotine.
