As the sun sets at the end of another day of bloody and violent battle, a line of wounded men approaches a dressing station. Blinded by the effects of a mustard gas attack they are spared the sight of their wounded colleagues lying on the ground around them.
Simply called Gassed, the painting - which measures 611cm x 231cm - is not a depiction of the heroic struggle that epitomised the romantic notion of the noble warrior, but of the aftermath of battle and the price paid by a generation who fought and fell for King and Country in the Great War of 1914-18.
