The Byzantine Emperor Justinian I (483-565) on a mosaic at the Basilica of San Vitale, Ravenna, capital of the Western Roman Empire. This scene commemorates the regaining of the city from the Ostrogoths. Famous for both the military campaigns and his ecclesiastical patronage, Justinian is pictured here flanked by his general Belisarius and the Archbishop Maximian.
