The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was founded in 1927 on the initiative of Louis B. Mayer. Its goal was to improve the artistic quality of North American films and promote filmmaking generally. It was the Academy's first president, Douglas Fairbanks, who came up with the idea of giving awards for the best productions. Art Director, Cedric Gibbons designed the trophy but the 'naked man with the sword' didn't have a name until 1931. Legend has it that an MGM secretary passing by the statuette said, "Why, it looks just like my Uncle Oscar!"
