1.
Less than three years after his infamous "panic attack" of War of the Worlds, Orson Welles stunned the film world with arguably the greatest motion picture ever, Citizen Kane. Welles embodied the notion of the auteur before the term existed - directing, producing, starring in and co-writing the script for the film. His experimentation with narrative structures, depth of field and complexity of plotline continues to inspire successive generations of film-makers. Citizen Kane opened in New York on 1 May, 1941 at the Palace Theatre; Welles was just twenty-five years old.
