When they embarked upon the film adaptation of Ian Fleming's sixth James Bond novel, Dr. No, producers Harry Salzman and Albert 'Cubby' Broccoli could hardly have known that they were creating a modern icon. Bond, played by Sean Connery, is the original ultra-cool secret agent; sophisticated gentleman, irresistible seducer and ruthless killer rolled into one. The Bond character epitomises Cool Britannia, hip and worldly whilst remaining unmistakably British. This charming mix of the traditional and the trendy combined with heart-stopping action, ingenious gadgets and gorgeous starlets made Dr. No a huge international success. The Bond franchise has produced nineteen movies to date and spawned countless imitators and spoofs. But there is only one Bond and nobody does it better.
