At the 2005 Academy Awards, Million Dollar Baby - a quiet, character based film - won four Oscars, including Best Picture. It was directed by Clint Eastwood under the aegis of his production company Malpaso. The film and it's director proved, if proof were needed, that special effects and enormous budgets are not necessarily the artistic merits that make the members of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences sit up and take notice. For Clint Eastwood and his company, Malpaso was anything but a wrong step.
